WHAT YOU WILL DO

Position Description:   

The Seattle Aquarium, a leading marine conservation organization, is looking for a Veterinarian Technician to join the Animal Health team. To further the mission of the Seattle Aquarium: ‘Inspiring Conservation of our Marine Environment’ by providing veterinary technician skills that can be applied across all taxa in an aquarium setting. Excellent attention to detail and communication skills are essential.  

Key functions:

Clinical veterinary care (70%) 

• Apply veterinary technician skills to the care of all taxa with supervision. The current collection spans two sites and includes northern fur seals, harbor seals, sea otters, river otters, alcids, shorebirds, temperate fish and invertebrates, and tropical fish and invertebrates. Responsible for 13,000 animals and 360 species; increasing to 16,000 animals and 470 species in 2024 with the addition of a third site. 

• Calculate, prepare, dispense, and/or administer medications. 

• Prepare for and assist veterinarians during medical procedures and occasional surgical procedures.  

• Perform or assist with phlebotomy and other diagnostic sampling. 

• Perform radiology and assist with ultrasonography and endoscopic procedures. 

• Prepare for and assist with induction, maintenance, and monitoring of anesthesia for all taxa under supervision. 

• Understand the basics of water quality and how it impacts fish health during handling.

• Calibrate, use and maintain probe-based meters. 

• Monitor patients during recovery or rare critical care. 

• Perform dental prophylaxis.

• Perform and assist with necropsy examinations under direct or indirect veterinary supervision. 

• Process samples for shipping to outside laboratories. 

• Maintain accurate and timely records. 

• Assist animal care specialists with training behaviors, such as ultrasound, hand-injection, and phlebotomy in pinnipeds, otters, and elasmobranchs. 

• Understand the basics of applicable USDA/APHIS animal regulations and the AZA accreditation standards.  

Management of veterinary spaces (30%)  

• Maintain clean and functional veterinary areas, including the Pier 60 Veterinary Clinic, Necropsies, and two Veterinary Labs, with the duty split across the Technician team. 

• Accurately record needs for drugs and supplies.  

• Maintain, clean, and sterilize surgical and endoscopic equipment and follow all equipment SOPs; help coordinate maintenance needs. 

• Maintain compliance with state and federal regulations for controlled substances, prescription drugs, hazardous waste, and work safety. 

• Provide interpretation of spaces or procedures for visitors, students, and donors as needed. 

Required skills and experience:  

We will consider various combinations of relevant experience and education to meet minimum requirements.   

• A Licensed Veterinary Technician certification for Washington is required. 

• Associate’s degree from an accredited Veterinary Technician school is preferred. 

• A minimum of one year’s experience as a full-time Veterinary Technician is required. 

• A minimum of one year of aquarium, exotics, zoo, or equivalent experience is required. 

• Must remain current on continuing education requirements. 

Working conditions:

• Requires handling, working with, or exposure to large, potentially dangerous animals, animal diseases, and potentially hazardous chemicals.

• Must be able to be on their feet 6 or more hours a day and be active through all physical motions.

Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park is dedicated to educating, entertaining, and inspiring our guests to respect and preserve wildlife by providing unique and memorable experiences for visitors of all ages to connect with marine life. One of the world’s oldest marine animal parks, Gulfarium opened its doors in 1955 on the beautiful beach of Okaloosa Island in the panhandle of Florida with a main dolphin habitat made entirely from battleship steel. Throughout the years, many additional habitats and exhibits have been added to house a diverse population including seals, sea lions, penguins, pelicans, teleost and elasmobranch fishes, and a wide variety of reptiles. The Gulfarium C.A.R.E. Center was developed as a 501(c)(3) in 2015 to continue the efforts of Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park rescuing and rehabilitating over 100 sea turtles annually.

The veterinary technician is responsible for assisting the veterinarian with providing excellent care and treatment of the animals at Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park and Gulfarium C.A.R.E. Center.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Collect, process, and analyze biological samples for any and all animals as directed by the veterinarian

Veterinarian - Clearwater Marine Aquarium

The Staff Veterinarian is responsible for providing the highest quality of medical care to all resident and rehabilitating animals.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Provide daily medical care for resident and rehabilitating animals, including but not limited to performing diagnostic procedures, administering treatments, maintaining clinical records and implementing preventative program

• Participate in the rapid response to all resident and stranded animal events, including those that occur during non-scheduled times of work or outside of operating hours

• Perform euthanasia and post-mortem examinations

• Assist husbandry staff with animal training plans that include medical care elements

• Assist in writing and implementation of standard operating procedures that ensure the highest standard of care

• Provide veterinary care and assistance during off-site animal health assessments and wildlife research projects domestically and internationally

• Collaborate with contract veterinarians and consultants on medical cases as appropriate

• Perform veterinary procedures in a public viewing environment

• Communicate with leadership in the absence of the head veterinarian

• Assist in developing veterinary externship and internship programs

• Participate in various PR and media events including professional interviews as deemed necessary or appropriate

• Design, conduct or collaborate on individual animal or population health research

• Participate as a committee member on the Research Committee, CMA’s IACUC, MRP and other organizational committees as appropriate

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• DVM/VMD from an AVMA-accredited university

• Must obtain a valid veterinary license in the state of Florida within 6 months of hire and maintain it in good standing

• Minimum of 5 years of experience as a veterinarian in a zoological institution with an emphasis on aquatic species

• Minimum of 3 years of experience with cetaceans or other marine mammals

• Experience with sea turtles, pinnipeds and manatees preferred

• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, nights, and/or holidays as needed; must also be able to share a 24/7 on-call schedule in case of emergency situations

• Knowledge of guidelines established by standard veterinary medicine procedures; specialized veterinary medicine procedures such as AZA, AAHA, FWC and APHIS-USDA

• Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

• Strong computer and record-keeping skills

• Positive attitude and strong guest focus

• Willingness to work internationally

Research and Necropsy Biologist - The Pacific Marine Mammal Center

The Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC) is hiring! PMMC is a rehabilitation hospital that cares for sick and injured marine mammals (primarily pinnipeds with occasional cetaceans) that strand in Orange County, California. We have a growing research program and have begun a large expansion of our rehabilitation center and water reclamation plant. Research and Necropsy Biologist is a full-time position that is responsible for conducting necropsies, facilitating research projects with collaborators/students, and assisting the Vice President of Conservation Medicine and Science with various research-related tasks. Daily activities include leading pinnipeds, cetaceans, and sea turtle necropsies, maintaining sample inventory, entering data into the electronic medical records system (Tracks), the Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program's National Stranding Database, Health MAP (when implemented), and as needed, participating in all aspects of the care of marine mammal patients and live cetacean stranding response. This position is critical in the acquisition of samples that support the important research PMMC conducts. Candidates should be passionate about conservation-focused research and be committed to the mission of PMMC (www.pacificmmc.org).

Primary Responsibilities:

• Conduct necropsies, maintain necropsy/histology sample inventory, and facilitate sample shipping

• Write necropsy reports, collate diagnostic findings, and order necropsy supplies/equipment; Input and maintain lab results, necropsy sample inventory, necropsy records, and histology findings into Tracks, the National Marine Mammal Stranding and Health database and Health MAP (once implemented)

• Oversee the Ocean Health Fellowship Program

• Facilitate research projects and coordinate collection of research samples and data

• Assists medical staff, as needed, in performing medical procedures and laboratory diagnostic

• Coordinate educating and training volunteers, undergraduate, graduate and veterinary students who participate in necropsy and research

Requirements and Competencies:

• Master's or Bachelor's degree in Biology, Marine Biology, Animal Science or related field. Preference will be given to those with a Master's degree and/or significant research experience in relevant fields

• Marine mammal necropsy experience required

• Must be available to work varying hours including being on call for live marine mammal stranding response and after-hours/weekend/holidays

• Must have a valid state driver's license

• Must be proficient in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Preferred qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years experience in marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation

• Experience managing large sample inventories

• Publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals

• Experience with Tracks (electronic medical record system), Conservation Standards and/or Miradi

• Experience with statistics and statistical analysis software

Stranding and Rehab Associate Veterinarian – Audubon Nature Institute

General Summary:  

The Coastal Wildlife Network (CWN) Associate Veterinarian will provide veterinary services for stranded marine mammals and sea turtles in Louisiana. This position will provide clinical care to stranded dolphins, whales, manatees, and sea turtles. The position will also lead necropsies on deceased marine mammals and sea turtles, and participate in research. The position is based in New Orleans, LA, but will respond to strandings throughout the state. During months where the caseload is not as heavy, the CWN Associate Veterinarian will support other Audubon Nature Institute facilities including Audubon Zoo, Audubon Aquarium, and Freeport McMoRan Audubon Species Survival Center. The CWN Associate Veterinarian serves as an Audubon liaison, along with the CWN Stranding Coordinator, for local, regional, and federal partners, which include, but are not limited to, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA NMFS), and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).

• Assist with medical data entry into our electronic animal medical records system (TRACKS).

• Maintain pharmacy. Dispense drugs, vitamins and other supplies as requested. Perform pharmaceutical and supplies inventories on a regular basis to restock as needed.

• Maintain surgery and treatment rooms, anesthetic equipment, medical equipment, and supplies. Prepare and assist with triage, surgery, diagnostic imaging, and procedures. Provide surgical assistance and anesthetic monitoring.

• Coordinate and implement radiology, laser, and surgical area safety programs. Archive diagnostic digital images.

• Ensures excellent animal care service by responding to the team's requirements, expectations and needs.

• Assist and participate in animal care or Hospital projects as requested; and other related duties as assigned.

What it takes to succeed:

• Veterinary experience is required. Animal or aquatic animal care experience preferred.

• Available to work weekends and holidays. Willingness to work evenings in the rare event of an emergency, procedure, or animal care need.

• Medical procedures require standing, walking, using hands, listening, talking and vision, and shuttling equipment, therefore must be able to lift and carry 25 lb.

• Maintaining records, computer data entry, dispensing pharmaceuticals, vitamins, and ordering supplies require a detail-oriented person able to multitask in a fast-paced environment.

• Basic computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft applications, spreadsheets and databases, including digital medical records (TRACKS).
