Plans, directs, and oversees animal health programs for collection and rescued animals. Enthusiastically represents SeaWorld by displaying a positive attitude, high level of energy and commitment to quality throughout all aspects of the job.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Oversees animal health programs.

  • Knowledge of current health status of collection.

  • Manages diagnostics, anesthesia, surgery, and treatment of collection and rescued animals.

  • Collaborates with curatorial staff.

  • Organizes and maintains pharmacy and surgery areas.

  • Oversees medical care of animal rehabilitation program.

  • Conduct post-mortem exams.

  • Maintain Animal Health records and preventative medicine program.

  • Conducts animal health research projects and prepares the results for presentations and peer-reviewed publications.

  • Perform animal health certification exams for animals and participate in transport of animals, if warranted.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or (VMD) from an AVMA-accredited institution required.

  • Must have a minimum of 2 years prior experience in zoological medicine, including marine mammals.

  • Board eligibility or Diplomate status in the American College of Zoological Medicine is desirable

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid California driver's license and to meet requirements to drive SeaWorld vehicles.

  • Must hold a valid U.S. veterinary license.

  • Must possess or qualify to obtain a Texas Veterinary License and USDA Accreditation certification

  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Must be able to lift and/or move 50 pounds.

  • Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (wet, humid, sun, etc.).

  • Must maintain a safe work environment and adhere to safety requirements.

  • Must be able to positively interact with guests and co-workers of all ages, different ethnic/cultural backgrounds and/or languages, and individuals with special needs

Availability:

  • 5 day work week, Tue-Sat preferred, can be negotiated depending on staff schedule and case load.

Hours:

  • 40 hours per work week, with periodic on-call or emergency duty based on case load.
