Responsibilities
Work, report to, and liaise with the Zoological Director and the Consultant Veterinarian on all animal care programs
Maintain daily preventative medical programs for all animals. This includes routine and critical care physical examinations
Treat sick or injured animals with the Consultant Veterinarian
Ensure the safety of animals and personnel during medical sampling and treatment
Monitor the collection of all medical samples, including fecal, respiratory, gastric, urine, and blood samples
Perform microbiology analysis of all samples taken, including cytologic specimens and blood films
Perform ultrasound sonogram examinations
Operate in-house blood analysis equipment
Ensure health and safety standards within the laboratory
Maintain medical supplies and equipment
Account for all health and medical records
Train staff for laboratory and animal care duties
Perform due diligence for any new medical products, equipment, and medication before purchase and/or use
Represent Ocean World at seminars and conferences as required
Work closely with section supervisors to ensure motivated, professional animal health care at all personnel levels
Liaise with, and assist, sister facility, Blue Lagoon Island in Nassau Bahamas
Requirements
Certified veterinarian
Minimum of 5 years of experience as a veterinarian – marine animal experience preferred
Good communication and public speaking skills
Able to bend, lift, and stand for prolonged periods
Good organizational and record keeping skills
Able to swim
Team player
Works well under pressure
English and Spanish language
Excellent people skills and ability to remain calm under stressful conditions
Compassion for animal and trainers
Knowledge of restraint of animal within our collection that include dolphins, sea lions, flamingos, psittacine birds, sharks, teleost fishes, and iguanas.
Knowledge of workplace hazards and infection control
Knowledge of the reproductive cycle of marine animals
Knowledge of our euthanasia policy
Knowledge of necropsy techniques
Knowledge of radiology and radiation safety
Pain recognition and emergency care
Recognition of internal and external parasites of birds
