The Hospital Manager is responsible for the efficient and successful functionality and daily operations of the veterinary hospital, diagnostic lab, and necropsy. This position leads the team of veterinary support staff, including the diagnostic lab techs & veterinary technicians, and is responsible of the team’s schedules, trainings, and development.

This position oversees the activities of the team and monitors the inventory of laboratory, pharmacy, surgical, medical, and necropsy supplies and equipment. The Hospital Manager also ensures compliance and standards are met with regulatory and accrediting bodies such as AZA, OSHA, DEA, State Radiation, etc. The Hospital Manager is integral to the maintenance of SeaWorld’s high animal welfare standards and to the advancement of the field and science of marine animal health. This role will support and participate in the animal welfare program and play an active role in research opportunities.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

Leadership, Safety and Guest Satisfaction:

  • Assist with development and implementation of team member & department goals

  • Communicate professionally and openly within zoo and park-wide staff

  • Be a liaison between veterinarians and support staff

  • Demonstrate a commitment to company values and safety

  • Depending on qualifications, participate in medical and laboratory procedures

  • Maintain a clear understanding of safety SOPs and ensure compliance from support staff

Staff Development & Supervision:

  • Responsible for staff development, coaching, goal setting, training, & promoting continuing education

  • Promote a positive team environment

  • Provide regular feedback, facilitate regular staff meetings, & conduct performance reviews

  • Participate in hiring & on-boarding of veterinary staff

  • Responsible for scheduling of area employees

  • Provide conflict mediation & resolution when necessary

  • Develop and promote employee recognition and motivation

  • Acquire and maintain knowledge of corporate employee policies and departmental SOPs.

  • Conduct team meetings and attend zoo leadership meetings

Hospital Operations

  • Responsible for maintaining the inventory of laboratory, pharmacy, surgical, medical, and necropsy supplies and equipment

  • Plans, coordinates and monitors the maintenance schedule for laboratory & medical equipment, inventory of testing material and components, and sanitation of laboratory area

  • Prepare, implement, & monitor annual budget, including monthly projections & accrurals

  • Ensure hospital compliance with regulatory agencies & standards such as AZA, OSHA, DEA, State of Texas, etc.

  • Identifies critical vendors, creates & maintains blanket purchase orders, tracks invoicing, maintains point of contact with vendors as well as SeaWorld finance & procurement team

  • Facilitate wildlife rehabilitation program

  • Provide leadership support & workflow evaluation for veterinary laboratory and medical procedures not limited to analyses of hematology, chemistry, microbiology, mycology, parasitology, urinalysis, cytology, water chemistry, anesthesia, & diagnostic imaging.

  • Develop knowledge and ability to act as back-up registrar (e.g., permit acquisition, local/state/federal regulation, licensing)

  • Maintain equipment warranties, service contracts, and equipment maintenance

  • Coordinate with the education department regarding scheduling and implementation of programming needs

  • Ability to utilize computerized medical record keeping system, evaluate & approve lab results and medical record entries

  • Develops, evaluates, implements, & ensures compliance of departmental SOPs

Position Requirements

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical lab Science, Veterinary Technology, management or science related field

  • Professional certification as a ASCP Certified Medical Technologist, Licensed Veterinary Technician, or Certified Veterinary Practice Manager

Essential

  • Five years of experience in a veterinary or clinical laboratory field

  • Three years minimum experience in a manager or supervisory position demonstrating superior leadership & teamwork skills

  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills

  • Ability to be flexible and adapt quickly as the needs of the animal collection develop

  • In-depth and current knowledge of laboratory equipment and technologies

  • Proficient with computer application, including in MS Office & medical record systems

  • Excellent Mathematical skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Must be available to work varying shifts/hours based on business need, to include opening, mid-, and closing shifts; weekends, and holidays

  • Physical requirements include: Able to lift, carry, push, pull up to 50 lbs extensive walking or standing indoors or outdoors; tasks that involve repetitive motions such as bending, stooping, or lifting

Preferred

  • Previous laboratory & veterinary experience in AZA accredited zoological facility

  • Ability to interact with media, zoo employees and guests and appropriately represent the company

  • Previous experience with budget software (SAP) and medical records (TRACKS)

  • Advance knowledge in laboratory analysis

  • Conservation oriented

  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office applications
