
Vancouver Aquarium is a self-supporting, non-profit association dedicated to effecting the conservation of aquatic life through display and interpretation, education, research, and direct action. The Aquarium opened in 1956 and more than 35 million people have visited since that time. Approximately 980 people volunteer at the Aquarium and in 2008, volunteers logged a total of 58,000 hours!
The Aquarium hosts:
- More than 33,700 fishes representing approximately 300 species and emphasizing the cold water marine habitats of the Pacific Northwest
- Nearly 30,000 invertebrates
- More than 350 amphibians and reptiles
- 60 mammals and birds including beluga, Pacific white-sided dolphins, harbour porpoise, Steller sea lions and northern fur seals
- The Vancouver Aquarium’s Marine Mammal Rescue Centre is the largest centre of its kind in Canada responding to approximately 140 live-stranded marine mammals every year
